Reading

Reading is of the upmost importance for all our children. We want children to read widely and often and to read for pleasure.

For this we provide children with a vast selection of reading materials.

In Foundation stage and Key Stage 1 your child will be given a Read, Write Inc book bag book, a Read Write Inc story book to access online tailored to their reading ability. They will also be given a book that they have chosen themselves from our school library. This book is to be shared at home with parents.

In Key stage 2 children are given Oxford Reading levelled books as a home readers. Once children have completed the schemes they are able to choose any book they would like to read from a vast selection of books.

When children have completed our school phonics scheme, they will also have access to reading plus, this is an online reading program designed to help build fluency in reading and develop comprehension.

We are very lucky to have a beautiful library for children to use, each week they are able to choose a book to take home. We also offer a wide selection of magazines and comics for children to enjoy!

Reading Incentives

Children are able to gain awards for reading a specific number of times, all we ask is that you sign your child’s reading journal each time they read with you. This can be reading anything it does not have to be their home reader. You can sign for each page they read or each chapter is does not have to be the whole book.

  • If your child reads 10 times they get a bronze award
  • 25 times for a silver award
  • and
  • 50 times to come shopping to pick a book of their choice!

Dear parents and carers,

Children are able to access their phonics books in an electronic format. This provides an engaging way for them to continue reading their home reading books, with the added benefit of quizzes at the end of each text and further phonics practice.

Each Wednesday, children will be assigned the book they have been reading in class during the previous week. It is expected that all children read their allocated book at home and complete the accompanying quiz. Teachers will maintain a record of completed reading and quizzes, and each time a child participates, their name will be entered into a prize draw which will take place at the end of every half term. This will also be added to their home reading certificate times to. (Read 10x for a bronze certificate, read 25x for silver and 50x for gold).
