Wessington Primary School will only administer prescribed medication when it is essential to do so, that is where it would be detrimental to a child’s health if the medicine were not administered.

Medicine should only be brought to the school when essential and when prescribed to be taken four times a day:  It is helpful if possible to work out dose frequencies so that it is not necessary to administer medication during school hours.

Medicine can only be accepted if it has been prescribed by a Doctor.

Medicine should always be provided in the original container as dispensed by the pharmacist and include prescriber’s instructions:

Medicine should always be in date and have expiry date on it:

Medicine should never be left in a child’s bag as it poses a risk to other children:

Medicine should always be handed over to the person with responsibility for managing medication.

Parents/Carers should remember that a few minutes will be required to complete an Individual Care Plan for their child to ensure correct medicine regime. All medication forms will be completed by the member of staff administering or applying the medication.

The giving of medication will be witnessed.

Members of staff administering medication are required to complete the medication form with the date, time, dosage and their signature when medicine has been given.

All short term medication must be returned to the parent at the end of the child’s session

Long term medication will be held in the setting and monitored to ensure it is always in date. Where it reaches expiry date the Parent/Carer will be informed and the medication will be returned to them for disposal.  The Parent/Carer will be advised to provide further medication.

Any medication which requires specific training/instructions to be given will only be accepted after a member of staff has received the appropriate training from a professional.
